Campaign Finance/Anti-Advocacy Bill Update Vote Postponed on H.R. 3485 until at least March 31 (posted March 27, 1998) According to the Let America Speak Coalition, H.R. 3485, the campaign finance reform bill containing a provision that would severely hamper non-profits’ advocacy abilities, will not be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives until Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the earliest. At that time, it may go to the floor under a special rule that would prohibit any amendments or substitutions. The swift outcry from the non-profit community is clearly having an effect in Congress. In particular, we were pleased to learn that Congressmen Robert Franks and Frank LoBiondo, both of whom were listed among the key New Jersey members to contact, have both come out against H.R. 3485. Your calls and faxes are making a difference! Let America Speak reports cautious optimism that the chances for passage of H.R. 3485 are not good, and that there is even a chance that the House vote will be postponed until after Congress’ spring recess. There is still time to communicate your opposition to H.R. 3485 to your Congressional Representative(s) if you have not already done so. We will keep you informed about new developments as they occur. If you have questions in the meantime, contact Linda Czipo at the Center.
